Before HBO became a big player in the original content game with hits like Game of Thrones, it was willing to try anything that could draw viewers in. This included allowing Hollywood mega-producers Richard Donner (director of Superman, Lethal Weapon, and The Goonies), Robert Zemeckis (director of Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, and Rogue One), and Joel Silver (producer Die Hard, Predator, and The Matrix) indulge in their love of gory, sleazy EU comics from their youth, producing the superb Tales from the Crypt anthology series.
Widely known for its ghoulish host, the Cryptkeeper, each episode has its own tone and unique approach to material, but the structure is almost always the same: someone does something unforgivable and gets punished. Within this framework, you can freely tell characters, incredible revenge stories, hilarious and twisted tales of infidelity, or even science fiction. With huge talent working behind the scenes and no worries about content, the series was a hit for seven years. It also spawned the children’s animated series Tales of the Cryptkeeper and two films. This groundbreaking series was hard to find anywhere but DVD and desperately deserves a return to our screens.
