A major player missing from the Thunderbolts MCU lineup

One huge absence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thunderbolts lineup is the guy who – in the comics – led the team in the first place: Baron Zemo.

In the MCU, Zemo (Daniel Brühl) is a character very different from his comic book counterpart, a notorious super-criminal who concocts a team of fake superheroes to gain and exploit the public’s trust. However, Zemo’s appearance in MCU titles like Captain America: Civil War and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has made him a fan-favorite villain. This was especially the case in the latest project, which established his baronial status, further explored his hatred of superhumans, and featured him in a dance scene that has become a meme.

One would think this would be the perfect setup for the upcoming Thunderbolts movie, especially since the team includes US Agent (Wyatt Russell) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). But for some reason, Brühl was not included in any of the advance announcements for the film. Given the MCU’s penchant for secrecy, it’s entirely possible that the character is being kept under wraps due to some twist: again, the first Thunderbolts comic ever ended with the stunning twist that the team leader, Citizen V, was Zemo.

As egregious as Zemo’s absence is, he’s not the only character fans are missing from the announced Thunderbolts team. As seen on Reddit, many MCU viewers were also hoping for Tim Roth’s Abomination, who is currently enjoying a resurgence thanks to her role in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. One such fan u/chesterFIELDincsuggests that Marvel may be hiding the Abomination until She-Hulk concludes.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts hit theaters on July 26, 2024.
