Age of Ultron is mostly fun

Years after Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) sacrificed his life to save the universe in Avengers: Endgame, his presence continues to be felt in the MCU. The first episode of She-Hulk Attorney at Law brings to life Stark’s fantasy once proposed to Bruce Banner. In one scene from Avengers: Age of Ultron, Stark defends his Ultron program in front of Banner as two scientists discuss its potential dangers. Banner warns his fellow avenger that using Ultron to protect the world is a human-sized “if” but Stark retorts, “Our job is an if.” What if you sipped a margarita on a sun-drenched beach and turned brown instead of green? Sure enough, that’s exactly what we find Banner, now in his Smart Hulk form that she does in the first She-Hulk episode, and all for Stark’s pennies.

After his first experience as the Hulk, Banner takes Jennifer Walters to Mexico, where he owns a property with an underground laboratory and a coastal resort at the top. Banner explains that during the Flash, Stark built a facility for him to work on merging his Hulk and Banner personalities. “He used to joke that it was a loan, that one day he would just drop by and pick it up,” Banner recalls.

The memory seems bittersweet to Banner, as Stark is now, of course, dead. And that’s not the only memento Banner keeps from his old friend. But the Beach House Lab is an incredible payoff from a seven-year-old one-off line and a powerful reminder that MCU architects are always looking for new ways to connect the ever-changing parts of the mega-franchise.
