In the first episode of Andora, our protagonist lives on the planet Ferrix, a desert world under the rule of the Empire. He seems to spend most of his time avoiding paying outstanding debts to other locals and sweet talk to avoid their wrath. He is in some way with a woman named Bix Kalin (Adria Arjona) who has her own secret plans. During one scene, she is doing what she calls an errand, but her suspicious colleagues follow her. During the chase, we see a slow, blocky gray droid blocking his path. Sharp-eyed fans might recognize him as a GNK power droid.
First seen in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, GNKs are also referred to as “race droids” due to the humming sounds they make. Primarily used as power generators, GNKs have a lower intelligence than most other droids and are suited to the basic functions they serve. They have large, square bodies with stubby legs and no arms, and are most commonly seen in the various cities of Tatooine, especially the Mos Eisley Cantina, although they are common on other underdeveloped worlds without a reliable food source.
Occasionally, GNK droids have been modified for other purposes, such as in the novel Star Wars Adventures 3: The Hostage Princess, which was found by Jedi Master Mace Windu on the planet Fondor and was equipped with a blaster inside. its boxy shell. Meanwhile, several “Battlefront” video games feature GNK droids as ammunition dispensers.
The presence of a race droid on Ferrix helps emphasize the poorness of the location, subtly signaling to viewers that the planet is underdeveloped. It’s a smart piece of exposition and a nice reminder that we’re still watching something in the Star Wars universe.
