Becca Tilly talks about Hayley Kiyoko’s relationship

After much speculation, Becca Tilly and Hayley Kiyoko confirmed their romance on May 20 in the singer’s “For the Girls” music video. And in the May 23 episode of Tilly’s podcast “The Purge with Becca Tilly and Tanya Red” Tilly said she was amazed at the public reaction to the news.

“I was ready for anything and everything,” she said. “I was not prepared for the amount of love and support we received. I just never could have predicted.” Apparently, Kiyoko’s encouragement helped Tilly feel comfortable finally admitting it. “Haley really made me feel brave,” she said. “And she always said, ‘People will love you, people love you, and they want to see you happy.'”

Rumors about their relationship have been circulating since 2018, when Tilly and Kiyoko merged in photos in Annual Young Hollywood Nylon party. In 2019 Tilly showed that she was in a relationship but wanted to keep it a secret. But in Kiyoko’s video for “For the Girls”, which parodies “Bachelorette Party”, Tilly gets out of the limousine at the eleventh hour and knocks Kiyoko down.

Acting in one of Kiyoko’s music videos was always part of Tilly’s plan. “I’ve always said, ‘I’ll go public – we can go public if I can be in one of your videos, like be a video girl,'” she said on the podcast. “And I’m not an actress, and she always hires actors, like real actresses. And that’s why she always said, “Okay,” she said. “And I just thought, ‘I think I’m ready, like, I think it’s about time.’ For four years now, as you know, this has been our relationship.”

Despite keeping their relationship hidden from the public until now, Tilly and Kiyoko haven’t really kept their relationship a complete secret. “We were ourselves. We held hands in public. We kissed,” Tilly added. “If I met someone… I would introduce her [as] my girlfriend Hailey. I never said, “This is my friend or my best friend,” she continued. “I really made an effort to make sure there was this distinction between private and secret.” The Bachelor,” including Ben Higgins, and the couple also attended the recent wedding of Jojo Fletcher and Jordan Rogers together.

Tilly went on to discuss her sexuality, adding that she never identified with a specific label. “Ahead of this moment, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m going to have to deal with, like, my sexuality, my label,’” she said. “I have never been involved with this. And I think that my story is different from the history of other people … It’s not like I personally controlled my whole life. When I met Hailey, it was the first time I had this specifically for a woman.” Tilly added that she was in love with both Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio in “Titanic” and Joey and Pacey in “Dawson’s Creek” but never thought about fitting into a certain category of sexuality.

Tilly also revealed a few other gems on the podcast, including the fact that Taylor Swift was the first person other than Tilly and Kiyoko’s closest friends and family to find out about their relationship. “The first person who found out about this in a strange way outside of my family and friends, I think, was Taylor Swift,” Tilly said. ‘Cause I flew out for Hailey [when she] went on stage with her in Boston, and after the show I met with Taylor in her dressing room,” said Tilly. “When I thought about it, I thought: “I think that was the first person who knew other than my friends and family. . . . It was like talking to a friend.”
