Newly released pop icon shared an image a quote from Rodney Dangerfield on her Instagram that read: “I’ve found there’s only one way to look skinny: hang out with fat people.” The quote is problematic from the start, but Spears’ added comment contributed to what the public largely perceives as a body shame.

In the caption, Spears spoke about the deterrents of her 13-year guardianship, writing: “I wish I could choose nannies for my kids… my dancers… I mean, if I had Christina Aguilera dancers, I would look really small.”

While she does resent the conservatism and the choices she couldn’t make for herself, Spears put herself in hot water by directly calling out Aguilera and implying her dancers are bigger, which was beneficial to those with smaller bodies. Spears’ caption continued, “I mean, why not talk about it?? Don’t you think that my confidence would be a little better if I could choose where I live, eat, who to call on the phone, meet and who is with me on stage!!!

It’s hard sometimes now, I see how much of my femininity was stripped at that time and every person sat back and said nothing!!! In any case… I will be here talking about things that people have NEVER talked about!!!”

Fans disapproved of Spears’ post, with commenters writing, “What did Christina’s dancers do to deserve this”, “This is so wrong, there’s so much more to life than looking skinny” and “Britney we love you – but this post is harmful to others”. who live in large bodies and people who experience ED. We know that you have suffered. But let’s not harm others in our healing.”

Aguilera, along with Selena Gomez and Paris Hilton, was seen unfollowing Spears after posting. Spears then shared another post in an attempt to clarify his intentions by writing: “In no way have I criticized Christina’s beautiful body, it is what it is!!! I flew once to her performance and the main thing that I noticed was the difference between our people on stage!!!”

Spears continued, “I didn’t mention Christina in any way, look at my post!!! I was inspired by her show and she is a beautiful woman of power… Thank you @xtina for inspiring me!!!”

She then returned to the aftermath of her guardianship, explaining, “Honestly, I’m not trying to criticize anyone. What I posted is a projection of the insecurities I face all the time due to how my parents and the media have treated me… I would never intentionally shame anyone because I know how it feels …

I fight it because of how I feel about myself, not because I hate how someone looks… I feel like my family knew I was insecure and people tried to purposefully feed that insecurity, not allowing me to choose among the people who were with me on stage.”

She ended with a heartfelt statement, “I appreciate you all understanding me as I make sense of this new life I’m living!!!”

We can only imagine the severity of the horrors Spears has faced during her custody, and as she adjusts to a life she can now control, it’s important that she be supported as well as held accountable for problematic behavior. At a time when cancellation culture is thriving, Spears deserves grace as she recovers from the trauma of the past decade. body shame for sure No atmosphere, and hopefully this experience will help Spears learn and grow.
