Cedric Joe on the role of Emmett Till in the film “Women of the Movement”

In our Q&A series Last callWe get to the heart of everything with some of our favorite celebrities – from when they were last hit by a star to the last song they listened to. Cedric Joe is answering our call this week.

Cedric Joe gets our attention with his role as Emmett Till in Women of Movement… A limited series of ABC anthologies follows the assassination of Emmett in 1955 and the story of his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, who later became an activist seeking justice for her son. After previous performances at Modern family, Good trouble, and Space Jam: A New LegacyThe show marks the 16-year-old actor’s most serious project to date.

Cedric told KristenBellTattoos.com that he feels a huge responsibility for the role of Emmett. “It meant a lot to me,” he said. “Everyone I was with and who helped me prepare for the role made it very comfortable and I’m glad I was able to play Emmett.” In replacing Emmett, Cedric also discovered what he was capable of as an actor. “It was definitely a different role, portraying someone who was real, portraying a story that actually happened.”

By watching Emmett’s story unfold on screen, Cedric hopes viewers can see that “we are all equal.” He added, “I hope they take away that Mamie and Emmett were the real people to whom this happened … I want viewers to know that stories like this happened then, happened before, and continue to happen now.”

Women of Movement aired on Thursdays on ABC. Read the rest of Cedric’s Last Call interview ahead.
