Christiane Amanpour Says Interview With Iran’s President Cancelled –

CNN’s chief international anchor, Christiane Amanpour, said she refused to do an interview with the Iranian president in New York after one of her staff told her she had to wear a headscarf.

“I politely declined,” Amanpour wrote on Twitter. “We’re in New York, where there is no law or tradition regarding headscarves. I pointed out that no former Iranian president has ever required one when I interviewed him outside of Iran.

Amanpour was scheduled to interview Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

He said on CNN that the demand was “lobbied at us at the very last minute” and that when he refused, the Iranians decided to do the interview.

The interview comes amid protests in Iran, in which women have taken off their headscarves and burned their hijabs in protest. The protests escalated after the death of Mehsa Amini, who died in police custody after allegedly breaking hijab rules.

“I think he didn’t want to be seen with a woman without a headscarf at that time, either because it’s a religious month or because people would say, ‘She’s a foreign journalist,'” Amanpour said. “How is it sitting? They are cracking down on young women inside Iran who don’t wear headscarves yet?”

He said the scheduled interview took weeks of planning and eight hours of setting up translation equipment, lights and cameras. Raisi, however, did not show up on time. Forty minutes later, she wrote on Twitter, an aide suggested she wear a headscarf because of the holy months. She wrote that the assistant made it clear that the interview would not take place if she did not wear one.

Amanpour wrote that the aide “said it was a ‘matter of respect’, and referred to the ‘situation in Iran’ – referring to protests across the country.”

“Once again, I stated that I do not agree with this unprecedented and unexpected condition,” he wrote. “So we left. There was no interview. With the protests going on in Iran and people being killed, it would have been an important moment to speak with President Rossi.”
