Walt Disney Studios has announced its new animation proposal. Strange world at D23 Expo today.
The film features characters voiced by Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jabuki Young-White and Lucy Liu, all on hand. It’s about a legendary family of explorers whose differences threaten to derail their last major adventure. The film is directed by Don Hall and written by Raya and the last dragon Ky Nguyen.
Hall called the film “the story of a family [and] a strong desire to leave them a better world.” The director described the film’s driving force as “our children”.
Nguyen said the story includes a hidden world, unique creatures, and “environments full of surprises and dangers”.
Strange world marks Gyllenhaal’s first appearance in a Disney animated film. He plays a character named Seeker.
“Being here is so great and sharing this trailer for the first time,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to do a Disney animated film, so it’s kind of a dream come true.”
“I love being part of the Disney family. It really was very, very good for me. I play Jaeger Clade. I am the father of the Seeker, and for me this is a completely different character. First, he has huge calves. Jaeger is a world famous explorer of his strange world, an adventurer. He’s stubborn, but he’s a lot of fun to be around – opinionated, but, you know, take him for who he is.”
Liu said that she “was thrilled to play such an amazing character because Callisto is cool. She is fearless. Leader.” She also refers to the character as “what I would like to be” because she wants to protect others.
“I love the idea of looking after other people,” she said.
Young-White, who plays the Seeker’s son Ethan Clayde, describes his character as “an incredible kid. Very happy with adventures, like his grandfather, not like his father. I feel a part of myself in it.”
