Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cook explore how women are treated in ‘House of the Dragon’

The House of the Dragon features many characters, but at its core lies the foundation built between Princess Rhaenyra and Lady Alycent. It was this dynamic that attracted the performers to their roles in the first place, as Emma D’Arcy explained: “I am well aware that at the heart of everything is the story of two women. That’s why we took on this job. D’Arcy felt that returning to this realm required some kind of hook to bring viewers back to the ride, and putting two women at the center of it was just the right thing to do the job.

Two female characters running a show in the Game of Thrones universe is more than just a hook. This is a reminder to all women watching that they too can choose their own stories. D’Arcy continues: “Probably the most important thing is that… there is nothing simple about what these characters are trying to do. [It’s about] two women living within the constraints of a patriarchal system. The important thing is that this show goes out of its way to tell this story from their point of view.”

They go on to mention that this is exactly what is interesting about this show. He doesn’t shy away from what it means to be a woman living under oppression. He solves this problem with all its complexities.

House of the Dragon premieres August 21 on HBO Max, with new episodes airing every Sunday.
