Heartbroken Ed Sheeran emotionally returns to the stage at his Christmas show after being out of the limelight.
The Shape of You singer sang a new track, Visiting Hours, which is about her daughter Lyra and late friend and music producer Michael Gudinsky.
The 30-year-old revealed that he wrote the new single earlier this year while processing the shock of losing Michael, who worked on his record-breaking world tours.
He said: “Everyone’s grandparents are passing away, so prepare yourself for that.
“I was sad when it happened, but it’s also part of life. But with my friend Michael it happened immediately and the next day we weren’t talking.
“That’s why I wrote this song in this kind of lonely moment where I didn’t want to talk to anyone about it. I wrote this song and it helped me achieve it.
“Then I played it for his family and they asked to put it on the album.
“I kept bumping into people who had heard the song and loved the song and it was super personal to me, but they found things that were personal to them.
“I’m really happy that this song has so many meanings, and it seems to belong to everyone, not just mine.”
Ed’s wife cherry She gave birth to Lyra in September last year.
The lyrics of the new song reveal his concerns about raising his firstborn and that he is “afraid of failing”.
He also sang: “I wish there were hours to come to heaven.
“So I could just show up and bring the news that she’s getting older.
“And I wish you met him. All the things he learned from me, I got from you.”
Michael died on March 2 at the age of 68.
The friends met when Michael went to see Ed rehearsing for a show in Melbourne.
Ed previously said: “We were friends first and foremost. He was a father figure and mentor to me, but at the same time we enjoyed the peaks of our touring career in 2018, with most tickets sold in Australia. Records broken.”
Michael brought some of the biggest acts in the world to Australia with his pioneering company, Frontier Touring.
heartfelt song for new song
Words for the visiting hours that Ed wrote for his friend Michael
I wish there was time to hang out in heaven so I could just show up and bring the news that she’s growing up
and i wish you meet him, all the things he learned from me i got from you
We’ve just taken some time and we’ll fix the whole world
Little kids will grow and I’ll still drink your favorite wine
as they’re about to close but i’ll see you another day, a lot has changed since you’re away
I wish there were hours of wanderlust in heaven so I could just turn around and ask for your advice
What would you do in my situation? I ain’t got no clue how I’m gonna pick them up
What would you do? Cause you always do what’s right
It took us a while until my worries disappeared, let me tell you I’m afraid to fail
You will say, “Remember that the answer is in the love we make”
A lot has changed since you left, I wish it was time to come to heaven
And I’ll ask them if I can take you home
But I know what they’ll say, that it’s for good
I will live life as you said and I will make it myself, I will close the door but I will open my heart
everyone I love will know who you are
Cause it’s not goodbye, it’s just till we meet again
a lot has changed since you left
