England’s Opener With Iran – KristenBellTattoos.com

England’s stunning World Cup opener against Iran, which ended 6-2, was watched by 8M viewers at lunchtime yesterday. The peak was similar to host Qatar’s opener with Ecuador.

The game did not come close to England’s first game at the Russia World Cup 2018, which hit a peak of 18.6M, even though the game was played in the evening.

The nearly four-hour program on BBC One was watched by a total average of 5.7 million, as England opened their tournament with a convincing win. Later, a 5M peak saw Senegal v Netherlands on ITV and an 11.5M peak for the USA’s evening opener against Wales, which ended 1-1.

Ratings for major sports matches are often deceptively low because the UK ratings agency Barb does not take into account viewing in pubs.

England’s game was in some ways overshadowed by matters off the pitch.

Iranian players refused to sing the national anthem in protest at the d*ath in custody of Maha Amini, and England captain Harry Kane abandoned plans to wear the One Low armband at the last minute after football’s governing body FIFA told him he could do so. Doing so will result in a yellow card. So BBC pundit Alex Scott, who has been an outspoken critic of the Qatari government and its human rights record, went live with armbands.
