One Direction may be on a long hiatus, but Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson as well as Zane Malik continued to make music – and headlines – for many years.
Formed and placed third in the UK version x factor One Direction released four successful studio albums in 2010 – Stay up all night, take me home, midnight memories as well as Four. However, after five years with the group, Malik was the first to leave the group, announcing his departure in March 2015.
“My life with One Direction has been more than I could have imagined. But after five years, I feel like now is the right time for me to leave the band,” he said in a statement at the time. “I would like to apologize to the fans if I let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right to me. I’m leaving because I want to be a normal 22 year old who can relax and spend time away from the spotlight. I know that I have four friends for life: Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”
Horan, Payne, Styles and Tomlinson released their fifth album.Made in AM, without Malik. However, shortly after the record’s release, the remaining members of the band announced that they were taking an extended hiatus. Less than a year laterUs weekly broke the news that the four had decided “not to renew their record contract”, eventually calling the group a fold.
“The problems with 1D just ran out of steam,” the insider said. Us in January 2016. “They will remain friends, but they are tired and want a solo career.”
