Golden Girls fans agree that this is the most enjoyable scene in the entire series.

In the season five finale, the aptly named “Sick and Tired” season five finale, Dorothy suffers from the sudden onset of several disturbing ailments. Her first impulse was to visit a doctor who told her that she was perfectly healthy. Despite his condescension, Dorothy demands a different opinion. She makes her way all the way to New York, where another, even more patronizing doctor named Dr. Budd (Michael McGuire) tells her that the illness is in her head. Budd’s assessment leaves Dorothy hopeless. Watching her cry is heartbreaking, as Dorothy is usually portrayed as the most stoic of the main characters.

Fortunately, a third doctor diagnoses Dorothy with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, finally giving her the confirmation she’s been so cruelly denied. All the girls go to dinner to celebrate, but Dorothy comes to her senses when she notices Dr. Budd eating with his wife at a nearby table. She confronts him and delivers an uplifting monologue about being forced to defend her own well-being in the face of apathetic medical professionals. This is a masterfully written scene that conveys the depth of her pain and resilience. The storyline is so poignant that decades after it first aired, it’s still amazing. “As someone who struggles with health issues and struggles with a diagnosis, it resonates with me to this day,” wrote Reddit u/illuminaughtyxox. The scene is undeniably inspiring, although you may be surprised to learn that this particular storyline was no fluke.
