Gwyneth Paltrow reflects on all the joys and sorrows of life ahead of her 50th birthday on September 27, and she does so looking fabulously carefree in a thong bikini.
Hollywood celebrity shared a photo on her instagram of her jumping with glee, with the caption “Reflections on a milestone – link in biography.” Link leads to reflective blog post on her goop website, where she analyzes the past years and shares her hopes for what the future holds for her.
Paltrow shared a sense of enrichment with age, not a sense of “deprivation…over time” as her father felt on his 50th birthday. She wrote: “On some level, I understand that life is linear, that so far I have lived x days, and I have more in the basket under my arm than in the field in front of me. But there is something in the sweetness of life that exists deep within me, that is unchanging, that will not change. This is the essence of the essence. It seems to be getting sweeter.”
She continued to reflect poetically on the signs of aging, finding beauty in them rather than seeing in them the ghosts of past youth. “My body, a map of the evidence of all days, is less timeless. A set of marks and bumps that overshadow chapters. In the scars from the ovens, a finger long knocked out in the window, the birth of a child. Silver hair and fine lines. The sun left its celestial fingerprints on me, as if it had soaked a brush in dark gray watercolor and brushed it across my skin.
And what awaits us in the future? Paltrow gracefully, peacefully accepts whatever comes. “While I do my best to strive for good health and longevity to prevent muscle weakness and bone death, I have a mantra that I insert into the reckless thoughts that try to derail me: I accept. I accept traces and loose skin, wrinkles. I accept my body and let go of the need to be perfect, look perfect, defy gravity, defy logic, defy humanity. I accept my humanity.”
In her beautifully written love letter to herself in the past, present and future, Paltrow sheds light on how much remains to be experienced after 50 years. Historically, society has looked at aging as an inevitable curse, but for Paltrow, it’s a privilege. .
Loose skin, wrinkles, the “heavenly fingerprints” of the sun… These are all signs of a life well lived, and a life well lived should be celebrated. As Paltrow enters her 50s, free from the shame and sadness of the years gone by and their tender marks on her physical form, we hope to follow suit, loving every second of the gift of life into our 50s and beyond.
