Indie movies of 2022 that should be on your must-see list

Laila Neugebauer’s low-key drama The Causeway marks a return to indie form for Jennifer Lawrence, who plays an American soldier recently returned to the United States after a tour of Afghanistan. While abroad, her character suffered a traumatic brain injury that forced her to undergo intensive therapy to restore her physical and mental abilities, initially under the care of a nurse (played by Jane Houdishell).

Eventually, Lynsey Lawrence is transferred home to New Orleans, where she moves in with her estranged mother (Linda Emond), but their reunion exacerbates past conflicts. She finds purpose while working as a pool cleaner and befriends an auto mechanic named James (Brian Tyree Henry), with whom she develops a touching friendship based on their mutual struggles with grief and trauma.

After a series of pompous performances in films such as The Silver Linings Guide, American Hustle and Don’t Look Up, it’s nice to see Lawrence return to the low-key, introspective performance she showed off in her breakout role.” Winter bone. She and Henry share a laid-back chemistry that makes The Road worth watching.
