Comedian beat Ali Wong: Don Wong, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah Presents: Jordan Klepper Sweeps the Globe – Hungary for Democracy, Nicole Byer: BBW (Big Handsome Weird) as well as Norm MacDonald: Nothing special win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.
“I wanted to win, I’m happy that I won. Thank you so much,” he said on stage wearing a Puff Daddy fur jacket.
“I did something that had a lot of personal meaning for me and that definitely gives meaning to it. I’m not an avid winner, but I’m going to go home because I can’t top it right now.”
Carmichael wrote, executive produced and starred in the acclaimed and deeply personal Rotaniel, in which he came out as gay. The comedian has established himself as a prolific creator and producer of hit series such as The Carmichael Show, which he also titled, and Rami. He also recently landed a major deal with HBO.
His third HBO special, Rotanielwas directed by Bo Burnham, who won the award last year for his Inside special.
