Season 7 “Designed to Kill: Part 1” is the type of Las Vegas-focused thriller that only CSI could have imagined. For example, in one episode of the episode, a flower delivery woman was somehow crushed to death during a Cirque du Soleil performance. To be honest, it’s just a normal vision of Sin City seen through CSI’s warped imagination. And we initially thought that with such a direct connection to the entertainment business in the episode, the case would somehow involve Mayer as perhaps a suspect or a witness who happened to be in the wrong place at the right time. None of this happens to the artist, as he only appears as himself, playing in a Vegas bar where CSI members Katherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) and Nick Stokes (George Eads) let off steam.
The two characters dance as Mayer plays “Waiting for the World to Change”. Mayer also continues this song with a deep rendition of “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room”. Both tracks were featured on Mayer’s third album. “Continuum”, which was released the same month and year that “Built to Kill” aired. This timing may explain Mayer’s reserved appearance. As some YouTube fans recalledthis scene served as a great introduction for CSI fans to Mayer’s music.
With “CSI” as the ratings juggernaut for CBS in the early 00s, using your music on the show was a smart use of some entertaining cross-promotion. Also, let’s take into account that “Designed to Kill” was the season 7 premiere episode that many fans are guaranteed to watch. We are already beginning to understand where some of the Continuum sales might come from.
