Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson: The dark side of their breakup

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson’s breakup is currently making headlines, but I’m more fascinated by how Davidson only seems to date in the most toxic way.

I know comedian Davidson, 28, is all the rage right now. He is very tall, boyishly handsome, funny, during interviews he seems sweet. I’m fascinated by him, but I’m also dismayed by his dating behavior. Seriously, he seems to get tattoos for every woman he’s dated for more than a month.

For example, he dated 41-year-old Kardashian for less than a year, and he already has several tattoos in honor of her. At the moment it seems less romantic and more a bit intrusive.

It also says a lot about how Davidson behaves in any relationship. It’s like he’s copying and pasting his signature – over the top – behavior to whoever he’s currently sleeping with.

Davidson achieved “that” boy status when he got engaged to pop star Ariana Grande in 2018. Since then, he has been in a number of very public relationships with famous women from Kate Beckinsale to Kaia Gerber. More recently, Kim Kardashian.

There is no denying that his relationship with Grande was complete. He gave Grande a necklace worn by his late father, who died in the September 11 attacks. He got tattoos in her honor, including her last name on his chest, and joked about Saturday night life that he wanted to replace her birth control pills with Tic Tac.

I’m sorry, but making jokes about wanting your girlfriend to get pregnant without her permission is creepy! It doesn’t matter how hot and tall you are.

Essentially, Davidson plays the role that true love lies in grandiose gestures and obsession. He joked several times about how he was always “tough” because of the pop star. At the peak of their public relationship, Davidson Grande’s open obsession was considered a couple of heads, but it was just a loud lesson in how not to behave.

However, these things do happen, right? We’ve all been a little aggressive in at least one way, but Davidson has made it a habit.

Although his relationship with the Kardashians was more private, he got a new tattoo consisting of the names of the Kardashian children. He also got a Kardashian tattoo that reads “My girlfriend is a lawyer” in reference to her preparing for the bar exam. He got these tattoos after dating the Kardashians for just a few months.

I would call this behavior a red flag.

Davidson’s actions remind me of the toxic men I idolize in romance books and movies. Like Edward Cullen TwilightNoah from Notebookor even the Beast in The beauty and the Beast. Does the guy watch you sleep? Nasty. Is a guy building a house for you when you’re engaged to another man? Too much. The guy who trapped you in his house? Illegal.

These fictional men exhibited obsessive behavior that I used to consider the pinnacle of romance, but now that I’m an adult, I find it less endearing and more intimidating.

But Davidson looks like the real life version of these fictional men. He makes big gestures and makes big statements, and a lot of young women watch him play in public relations and want it in their relationships. They want a guy to get their name tattooed because they take these actions for love, but love is much more subtle.

Davidson’s relationship behavior is neither cute nor matey. It’s toxic and unhealthy, which is probably why none of his relationships last.

Grand gestures and nice words are not a recipe for a healthy and lasting relationship. In truth, it’s much more mundane things like communicating and respecting each other’s boundaries.

What is most disturbing about Davidson’s relationship history, however, is that she romanticizes toxic behavior for a whole new generation of women. Davidson has become the Edward Cullen of this generation, except he is not a vampire but a real celebrity.
