LAUSD To Provide Schools With Narcan After Incidents With Teens Overdosing – KristenBellTattoos.com

The Los Angeles Unified School District has announced that it will make Narcan, an anti-overdose drug, available to all schools. The announcement came after a 15-year-old student was found dead in a Hollywood school bathroom after an overdose of fentanyl.

Alberto M. Carvalho, superintendent, said naloxone (Narcan) will be available in all K-12 schools. This drug has proven to be very important because it “temporarily reverses the effects of an overdose in emergency situations.” The National Institutes of Health says it is safe and is given as a nasal spray.

“Research shows that naloxone, along with its availability, is effective in reducing overdoses and deaths,” LAUSD Medical Director Dr. Smita Malhotra said in a statement. “There has been an increasing trend of illegal drugs and contaminated pills containing fentanyl and other deadly substances entering Los Angeles. Los Angeles Unified will do everything in its power to ensure that “That no other student in our community falls victim to the growing opioid epidemic. Keeping students safe and healthy is our top priority.”

Dr. Malhotra also said Los Angeles Unified will implement “peer-to-peer counseling” and work to educate communities about the dangers of drugs.
