Matt Linz talks about playing Bruno Carrelli in Ms. Marvel

In our Crush Q&A series, we get to know some of the more intimate details of our favorite celebrities, from their first crush to the best love advice they’ve ever received. This month, we’re crazy about Ms. Marvel star Matt Lintz.

Matt Linz graces our screens again, this time in the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. Based on the Ms. Marvel comic book, the new series follows Kamala Khan Imani Vellani, a 16-year-old Pakistani-American Muslim who lives in Jersey City, New Jersey. Kamala, who is a big fan of Captain Marvel, is struggling to find her place in the world when she suddenly has superpowers of her own.

Linz, who you’ve probably seen in The Walking Dead, The Alienist and Pixels, plays Kamala’s best friend/lover Bruno Carrelli. “Bruno is Kamala’s tech-savvy best friend. He is very empathetic, very loyal and very caring,” Linz tells about his character. “Then you have this Kamran [Rish Shah] a character appears and he is very protective of Kamala, but he has been Kamala’s best friend ever since he was a child. He’s pretty much introduced into the family. They have a very, very close relationship.”

“This is one of the most interesting Marvel stories you can watch.”

Speaking of Kamran, it looks like Kamala might have a love triangle on her hands, though Linz says it “definitely needs interpretation.” He adds: “Bruno’s world is shaken when his best friend gets powers and he tries to figure it out and overcome all the problems that can cause and excitement from [it all]. And then we go to this party and this pretty Brit comes out of the water and he might be a little upset or insecure and that causes more problems or another dynamic in his relationship with Kamala. .”

To make sure their chemistry would show up on screen, Linz and Vellani spent a lot of time pre-production, figuring out Bruno and Kamala’s dynamics and how their relationship would feel in real life. “All we wanted was to make sure people saw us on screen and looked like we’ve been friends for years,” shares Linz.

Ms. Marvel is the first Marvel Studios project to focus on a Muslim character, which Linz says is “a big step not only in the Marvel universe, but in the world.” “This is a series about a girl who goes to high school and becomes a real superhero. This is one of the most interesting Marvel stories you can watch. I mean, anyone, any age, any skin color, anyone can watch this and find a character they like. k. And diversity is something that is very important,” says Linz. “And for me to have a small part in telling this beautiful story about Kamala Khan and that world in Jersey City is great. And it’s so different from how it’s filmed… the tone is so different from anything people have seen and it’s really refreshing. I think people will like it.”

Ms. Marvel premiered on June 8 on Disney+, with new episodes released weekly. Read the rest of Lintz’s Crush interview ahead.

Are you Team Bruno or Kamran?

So me and Rish [Shah] talked about it a lot. He is from Bruno’s team and I am from Kamran’s team. Actually we print shirts.

What love advice would you give to Kamala Khan?

If I were talking to Ms. Marvel, I would say, “Follow your heart. Look for what’s best for you. Whether it’s Bruno or Kamran, just follow your heart.”

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

It will be teleportation. Flying is great and all, but teleportation is so convenient. You don’t have to pay for flights. You can just go anywhere.

Besides Ms. Marvel, who is your favorite Marvel character?

There are so many. I grew up with Tobey McGuire’s Spider-Man and all those incredible MCU movies. But if I had to choose, I love the Winter Soldier. I think he is a great character. [“Captain America: The Winter Solider] Probably one of my favorite films too.

Who was your first celebrity?

I think it was Ariana Grande. I used to watch everything related to Nickelodeon, Disney.

What is your idea of the perfect date?

For me personally, this is the place where you feel most comfortable with your soulmate. It could be anything – a car, a good dinner overlooking the river, anything. It should be by candlelight, and maybe a few flowers, but a candlelight dinner in a convenient location.

What is your favorite form of self-care?

I love going to the gym. I found a gym a couple of years ago and I’m kind of stuck in it. For me, it’s a way to de-stress and clear my head a bit, and it’s good for my body too.

The strongest excitement?

Just be yourself, which sounds like a cliched answer, but I know so many people who try to mask who they really are, who try to be who they are not. If you’re 100 percent sincere and feel comfortable, that’s the most attractive trait I see in someone, and it goes a long way.

Biggest twist?

The biggest hurdle will probably be just trying to use people for personal gain. I know several such people, and this is just a big minus. I love sincere people who love themselves but are also very empathetic and understanding of others.

What is the most romantic thing you have ever done or done for you?

I’ll go with the recent one. I invited my girlfriend, bought her flowers, and we went to where we had our first date on our five-month anniversary. We went back to the restaurant where we first met, which was nice. [The restaurant] was very important, and he keeps a lot of memories.
