Humble start. Meghan Markle apparently had an instant connection with Queen Elizabeth II — and despite the ups and downs of the duchess with the royal family, their friendship lasted until Her Majesty’s death in September 2022.
Bench The author was introduced to the Queen in 2017, shortly before she and Prince Harry announced their engagement in the fall. After the couple tied the knot in May 2018, Meghan’s relationship with the Queen has blossomed.
“[Her Majesty] has a brilliant sense of humor. It’s one of the first things that brought her and Meghan closer,” the source said. Us weekly in June 2018 after Meghan joined Elizabeth for a solo performance. “It was this warm side of her that made Meghan feel so at ease.”
The Archewell co-founder recalled in her candid interview with CBS in March 2021 that her trip to Cheshire, England with the monarch was more relaxed than some might think.
“We were driving in the car between engagements. And she has a blanket that keeps her knees warm and it was cold,” Meghan recalls. “And she was like, ‘Megan, come on,’ and put it on my lap too. … And it made me think of my grandmother, who was always warm, hospitable and very hospitable.”
Although they started on the right foot, Meghan’s relationship with her grandmother hit a dead end after she and Harry announced their plans to step down from their top royal duties in January 2020. A year later, the couple confirmed that they would not return as working members of the royal family and would remain in California.
While the Queen shared a statement of support for the couple who moved to the US in early 2020 with son Archie, a source later revealed Us that Elizabeth wanted a different outcome. “The Queen hoped they would return but there is little she can do about it and she accepts their decision,” an insider said in February 2021.
Their dynamic escalated further in March 2021 when Meghan and Harry spoke out against the monarchy during a CBS meeting. The Sussexes claimed at the time that Meghan faced racism, mostly from the British press, while living in London and that she did not feel supported by The Firm.
“The entire family is saddened to learn how difficult the past few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement after the allegations made headlines.
The insider told Us in the same month: “The Queen always had a soft spot for Harry and took care of him, so [she] incredibly hurt and shocked that it has come to this.”
The drama surrounding Harry and Meghan subsided somewhat in June 2021, when the couple welcomed their daughter Lily, named after Elizabeth. (The queen’s nickname is Lilibet, Lily’s full name.)
The source said Southern Californians have “great respect for the queen.” Us after Lily’s birth, noting that the nickname “has always been their favourite”, but before they chose it, it had to be approved by the queen. Us in June 2022, it was confirmed that the couple introduced Lily to the late monarch before she passed away at the age of 96 a few months later.
