To promote Raymond & Ray directed by Rodrigo Garcia, Ethan Hawke turned to Screen ranting and revealed an interesting fact about the Moulin Rouge and about himself. As it turned out, he once tried incredibly hard to get the role of Christian. “I did one of the greatest screen tests of my life for Moulin Rouge!” I didn’t get the part. I blew that audition,” he told the publication. After all, the powers that be, Ewan McGregor – the man who starred in Raymond & Ray alongside Hawke – would be a better fit, and the rest is history.
Despite the fact that he gave everything he had to the audition, only to not get a place in the Moulin Rouge! when all was said and done, Hawk took the rejection calmly. He adds: “It just shows you how much I love Ewen’s work. I went to see the film on opening day anyway, and I liked it. So I got through it.” Though, he jokes, one day the tape of his audition might come into the public eye, and when it does, people will rethink some things about Hawk missing out on the role. However, it’s fair to say that he liked it. pretty solid career since thenso it didn’t hurt him too much in the end.
It goes without saying that Ethan Hawke would have made a great Christian, but as fate would have it, Ewan McGregor was the man for the job.
