Nothing new! Starting from season 4 Dancing with the Stars, Olympic athletes were at the top of the list when it came to celebrities. Like all celebrities who join the show, some of them achieve incredible success while others fail.
Apolo Ono was the first Olympian to compete, taking home the mirror ball trophy with a professional partner. Julianne Hough in 2007. Ohno’s victory again invited him to the 2012 All-Star season, during which he was paired with Karina Smirnoff. However, he failed to catch the trophy on his second run.
In 2021 suni lee was one of the first stars to be announced for the epic 30th season that had just completed participation in the Tokyo Olympics. Her former teammate Lori Hernandezwinning the mirror ball trophy in season 23, and Simone Bilesplacing fourth in season 24 furthered her hopes of being on the show.
“I saw so many people going there and doing Dancing with the Stars, so that was one of my goals after the Olympics,” she said at the time, noting that her friends bullied her because she didn’t dance well. In addition, she knew that it would be difficult for her to allow herself to smile and have fun on the floor. “You express yourself even more when you dance because you are a bit stuck in gymnastics. Dancing is just super fun.”
Biles, who danced with Sasha Farber in a series of competitions, he also faced backlash for not smiling enough while dancing.
“Your skills are undeniable”, Judge Carrie Ann Inaba told her during a 2017 episode. “You hit every line with precision and perfection. But once again, I’m going to get back to the performance and authenticity of who you are when you perform. … You have a beautiful smile and you are a megastar with your energy, but sometimes there is beauty without a smile. There is beauty in pain and in all other emotions, and I would like to see more of that.”
The athlete simply replied: “Smiling does not bring you gold medals.”
