Dealing with her diagnosis. In the years after Selma Blair Upon learning that she had multiple sclerosis, the actress was candid about her new normal.
The Michigan native rose to fame by starring in popular films, including Cruel Intentions, Legally Blonde as well as After. Amidst her notable Hollywood career, she announced in October 2018 that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
“I went to a wardrobe fitting two days ago. And I am deeply grateful. It’s so deep that I thought I’d share,” Blair wrote in an Instagram post in October 2018. “Brilliant dresser #Allisavanson not only designs the clothes that #Harperglass will wear on this new #Netflix show, but carefully slips my legs into my pants, pulls tops over my head, zips up my coat and props it up with my shoulder to keep me from falling off. I have #multiple sclerosis.
She continued at the time, “I have a flare-up. By the grace of God, willpower and understanding of the producers of Netflix, I have a job. Great work. I’m disabled. I sometimes fall. I drop things. My memory is hazy. And my left side asks for directions from a broken gps. But we do it. And I’m laughing, and I don’t know exactly what I’m going to do, but I’ll do my best.”
Years later, Blair, who shares her son Arthur with an ex Jason Blake – spoke frankly about her health problems, even starred in a documentary about her diagnosis, Introducing Selma Blair.
“We have a lot of time to be dead, and I’ve spent so much time trying to kill myself, or numb myself, or test – or figure out how to be alive while being half dead.” American Crime Story Alum said in a documentary that premiered in March 2021. “Now I just want to help other people feel better.”
When Blair had a battle with multiple sclerosis, she decided to subscribe to Dancing with the Stars 31 season.
“Once I really stood with Sasha [Farber, my DWTS partner] and really understood, like: “Oh, he can help me at all,” she said. Us weekly in September 2022 ahead of the Disney+ premiere. “[I’m] so excited for the camaraderie, for the support [from] people. I didn’t realize how much I missed it and… there was horror and nerves. [because] I don’t have any experience in dancing, like pa, I can pretend to be a dancer for maybe two seconds.”
She added, “One day I decided [to join the show] and convinced my team that I can do it [and] that it won’t be too dangerous for me that I can do it [because] we do what we want to find joy in, and then I’m completely in business.
