“She’s brown like me!” Kids react to Halle Bailey in The Little Mermaid

One mother shared her daughter Maya, who was almost speechless after seeing Bailey as Ariel on her TV screen. Looking back at her mother, haltingly, Mei finally said, “She’s as dark as me, I’m so glad to see this movie.”

In a video featuring three young girls, the father wrote:

So cute! AT Interview per DiversityIn a 2022 issue of Young Hollywood Power, Bailey spoke about her address of racist criticism of her choice of social media trolls. Bailey recalled that her grandparents were supportive at the time, which reminded her of who she was doing it for.

“It was uplifting and wonderful to hear their words of encouragement telling me, ‘You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little black and brown girls who will see themselves in you,’ Bailey said.

The Disney remake of The Little Mermaid will hit theaters on May 26, 2023.
