Michael Jackson hid the depth of his prescription drug addiction in the last weeks of his life, according to his pal Akon.
Speaking to a new documentary about the death of the king of pop, R&B star Akon revealed that he didn’t see any red flags during his last video call with Michael Jackson.
The friends who worked together on the Thriller 25 album and Hold My Hand duo chatted just two weeks before Jackson’s tragic overdose death in June 2009 at the age of 50.
The 49-year-old singer told The US Sun: “He didn’t look sick or move like he was sick.
“He was one of those people who, if he felt bad, would not say anything. He never wanted anyone to see his weakest moments.
“Michael was bigger than life to everyone and he always wanted to lead by example. He felt that power must be shown.
“So if he was sick, the only person who would know about it would be his doctor or maybe one of the managers, but to the people of the world, he would never show it. He may be as sick as the dog in front of you, but you will never know because he will act like everything is fine.”
Akon, who was born in St. Louis, spoke ahead of the premiere this week of the Fox TV documentary TMZ Investigates: Who Really Killed Michael Jackson.
The TV special points the finger at the late dermatologist and celebrity doctor Arnold Klein for getting MJ hooked on painkillers.
Jackson’s ex-wife Debbie Rowe told the documentary that she feels guilty about standing by while her boss, Dr. Klein, treats patients like MJ.
A source in Jackson’s family told Kristen Bell Tattoos that some of his relatives and friends were “overwhelmed” by what Rowe said.
Akon says he had no idea that Jackson was taking powerful anesthesia with propofol with the help of his doctor, Conrad Murray.
Murray was convicted in 2011 of manslaughter for providing the dose of propofol that killed Jackson in Los Angeles.
Akon said: “If you know Mike the way I know him, then the only person who can be held responsible for anything happening to Mike when it comes to prescriptions is a doctor.
“Because nobody got close enough to Mike to do it. And Mike was never around drugs.
“I know for sure, because I was next to him for almost two years in a row and did not see anything like this.
“The only person who can be held responsible for anything that could happen to Mike when it comes to prescription drugs would definitely be a doctor.”
“DID NOT DRINK, SMOK, AND DON’T TAKE DRUGS”
Akon was also adamant he would intervene to save the superstar if he witnessed anything out of the ordinary.
He explained: “Trust me, if this ever happened to me personally, trust me, Mike would not do anything like that.
“Because when we were together, drugs were not even discussed. He knows I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t do any drugs.
“As far as I understand, I knew him, he didn’t smoke, didn’t drink, didn’t use any drugs.”
Akon also revealed that Jackson was both a professional inspiration and a sensitive soul away from the limelight.
He said: “Working with him was probably the greatest honor of my life. I grew up and, like many others, was a big fan of Michael.
“He was amazing. But Michael had two sides – the artist and the personality. The artist has always been perfect.
“He wouldn’t settle for anything less than amazing.
“It seemed to me that he took on too much when he became an artist, because he always wanted the world to experience something that they had never experienced before. He was a perfectionist to the core.
“I go with the flow more, but Mike never believed in it.
“He felt it must be the most incredible thing anyone has ever seen, heard or experienced. He lived and ruled it.”
Earlier this week, Kristen Bell Tattoos reported that Akon believes Jackson took sleeping pills before he died because he was trying to put on “the greatest show on earth” and was too excited to sleep.
He also explained how MJ’s drive was “a gift and a curse” as he prepared for This Is It’s concert residency at the 02 Arena in London in 2009.
Akon spoke about his friend when he was promoting his new single Enjoy That and an EP release called Konvict Kulture Presents Teemanay.
He explained, “On Enjoy That, the chorus says, ‘Why live a life like mine if you’re not taking the time to enjoy this shit?’
“This is a reflection of all that I have experienced. I have the most amazing life, but the problem is that I never have time to enjoy it.”
Akon also created the energy company Akon Lighting to create clean energy in Africa and the Americas and launched the Akon City project in Senegal to establish a fully sustainable city in the West African country.
TMZ Investigates: Who Really Killed Michael Jackson, with exclusive and never-before-seen interviews, premiered Tuesday, September 6 on Fox.
