Everything is fair in Dick Wolf Universe! Started as a writer on Blues Hill Street in the 1980s, the producer became a superstar when he created Law and order in 1990.
Since then, the TV giant has directed several Law and order spin-offs, including long-running series Law & Order: Special Victims Unitpremiered in 1999 and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Wolf then took audiences from New York to Chicago by creating Chicago Fire in 2012 and its spin-offs: Chicago Police, Chicago Honey as well as Chicago Justice.
Just when fans thought Wolf couldn’t have more procedural drama ideas up his sleeve, he created the FBI universe, which consists of FBI, FBI: Most Wanted as well as FBI: International.
Over the years, eagle-eyed fans may have noticed that Wolf has several favorite actors who have appeared time and time again on his series, including Christopher Meloni. (That’s not counting the full crossovers he does in the One Chicago universe and FBI region.)
Washington D.C. native was a member of OG Law & Order: SVU starred, but left in 2011. In an unexpected turn of events, Meloni got his own series, Law & Order: Organized Crimein 2021, in which he plays his own SVU character, Detective Elliot Stabler.
“These two shows exist in the same universe, a fictional, very mundane universe. And we never forget that these other characters and these other stories exist,” Wolf said. Wrapper in April 2021 after fans saw Meloni’s reunion with Mariska Hargitaywho plays Detective Olivia Benson in SVU. “And when we tell a story about Stabler in Benson’s world, or Benson in Stabler’s world, and things happen that affect their characters, we don’t just forget about it.”
The executive producer continued, “So from a storytelling standpoint, it’s both difficult and painful to keep these things alive while the shows have their own personality, each one.”
Meloni, for his part, said Entertainment Weekly in March 2021, Wolf made him an offer he couldn’t refuse, which led to him reprising his role as a detective and appearing intermittently alongside Hargitay on both shows.
“I was pleasantly surprised that everything worked out as well as it did. Because, you know, life doesn’t shake out like that, right?” he told the publication. “You can have all the dreams you want, all the preconceived notions of how it will be. But I have to say that the past decade has been all I could have hoped for.”
Meloni is not the first actor to play the same role in multiple Wolf series. Philip WinchesterFor example, it first appeared on Chicago Police like Peter Stone before you go to Law & Order: SVU in 2018.
Actors such as Jeremy Sisto as well as Alana De La Garza made an impression on Law and order in the early 2000s before joining forces on FBI over ten years later. However, the two stars play very different characters in crime series, and they are not alone in this category.
