When you play Game of Thrones, you win – or you cause controversy. Game of Thrones and its spin-offs, Dragon Housefaced tons of backlash over the years.
Almost immediately after the original series premiered on HBO in April 2011, critics began to question whether the drama really needed so much nudity. One month after the pilot aired, writer Miles McNutt coined the term “sexposition” to describe a certain kind of scene from Thrones where characters discuss important plot points in intimate moments.
In one particularly egregious example, Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) explained his whole history with Catelyn (Michelle Fairley) and Ned Stark (Sean Bean) simultaneously teaching two prostitutes how to properly please a man. This scene was one of many that seemingly inspired the 2012 film. Saturday night life sketch of who was actually in charge of all the sex on the show: a 13-year-old consultant named Adam, played by Andy Samberg.
Bye Game of Thrones the writers apparently toned down the nudity in later seasons, the show still had a reputation for gratuitous nudity when it was a spin-off. Dragon House premiered in August 2022. Leading up to the show’s debut Matt Smithwho plays Damon Targaryen, joked that he thought his character had “too much” sex.
“Do you find yourself asking, ‘Do we need another sex scene?’ Crown alum said Rolling Stone UK in August 2022. “And they’re like, ‘Yes, we do.’ I think you should ask yourself, “What are you doing? Do you represent books or water down books to represent time? [we’re living in]? And I really think it’s your job to present books truthfully and honestly as they were written.”
As for the literary side of things, Song of Ice and Fire creator George R. R. Martin was criticized for failing to finish the book series on which the show is based. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the announcement of the release date for the upcoming sixth installment. Winds of Winterfor over ten years now.
Martin, meanwhile, finished a separate book about the Targaryens – Fire and bloodwhat became the basis for Dragon House – and participated in the creation of a video game ancient ringamong many other projects.
In August 2022, the New Jersey native admitted that he had stopped predicting when he would finish the series, which should include at least one more novel after Winds of Winter. “I am making progress, but I have lost all hope of predicting the end,” he said. Vanity Fair. “Every time I do it, I miss it and everyone gets mad at me and it makes no sense. It will be done when it is done.”
