There’s a Grinch and a Cat in the Hat Movie That’s Sad

Someone saved the Grinch from his reflection.

By this point, I think we’re all familiar How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

This is a beloved Dr. Seuss children’s book that then became the famous 1966 animated Christmas special. It was later adapted into an equally iconic live-action film with Jim Carrey in 2000, and animated once again in 2018.

But what many people don’t know is that the Grinch doesn’t always show up around Christmastime. years ago, I wrote About this Halloween is Grinch Night, A strangely sinister 1977 Halloween special in which the Grinch plans to terrorize Whoville, but instead goes after a boy named Eucharia. Well, I’m here today to tell you that another weird non-Christmas Grinch special exists, and this time it’s from 1982. It is called: Grinch Grinch the Cat in the Hat,

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

The TV special won an Emmy at the time and was created by Marvel Productions before becoming New World Animation Ltd. So yes, I think the Grinch is a Marvel villain.

Let me break down the whole story for you. We start with the Grinch waking up in an unusually good mood in the morning. He whistles with the birds, and Max knows something is wrong about it, but rolls with it nonetheless.

As the Grinch walks to his dresser to comb his hair, we get a glimpse of a photo of the Grinch’s mother. We will come to him much later.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

When he approaches his mirror, he talks to his reflection and wishes good morning. Now this is where things start getting weird. His reflection—which isn’t in a good mood—yells back at him and says, “I don’t see anything to surprise. You must be out of your head, no doubt.”

The bad Grinch reflex then takes the good Grinch to “The Grinch Oath”, which goes as follows: “A Grinch is unlovable, unfriendly, ruthless. With unreasonable thoughts, of unsound mind. A Grinch is rude, out-of-mouth and unclean.” ..”

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

And wouldn’t you know, it was enough to convince him that he’s not really a good person. After the Grinch tells him that he is “terrifyingly mean”, Reflection also tells him to “prove it”. Literally straight out of a horror movie.

So what does the Grinch do? Well, he goes out and proves it. how do you ask? By pumping some smog on the singing birds, causing them to fall.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

Then we cut to a more happy character, the Cat in the Hat. He is singing a song as he prepares to leave for a picnic lunch.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

As the cat (we’ll call him abbreviated) eats his lunch on a hill, the Grinch sneaks into the cat’s car because it’s blocking the road. In all fairness, I, too, would be the Grinchy in this moment, ’cause who parks their car in the middle of the damn street?

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

And if that wasn’t enough to piss off the Grinch, the cat apologizes to him, but refers to him as “Greenface,” which pisses off the Grinch. It means war, right.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

The Grinch then does what any logical person would do…try to get the cat off the road.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

The Grinch is out for Blood now.

Cat eventually makes it home, but as he begins to relax and play a song on his guitar, his music and vocals begin to play like a tape. The sound is strange…weird, and it keeps happening.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

Then we see the Grinch’s eyes gleaming from inside Cat’s house. He asks the cat to come inside. So yes, the Grinch followed the cat home and then sneaked in.

The Grinch is walking around as if he pays the rent for that house and introduces his contraption to the cat. This one is called, “Acoustical Anti-Audio Bleeper.” otherwise known as [his] Vacu-Sound Sweeper.” The invention has the ability to get rid of every noise and sound and also gargles sound waves up to 50 miles.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

The Grinch then says to the cat, “From now on, you will hear what I want you to hear.” Really disturbing.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

The Grinch even has a song about it, with fun lyrics, such as “The sound of your voice is the sound of my choice” and, “I own everyone’s ears.”

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

Once he gets back home, he draws his poor dog Max into his plans and exclaims, “That bezelberry cat! I lowered his voice. Now I’ll do more. Put it on my 39th floor.” Take it to the store. That cat will be hurt. Like never before.”

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

Then he builds a “dark house”. So the way a lighthouse creates a large beam of light, this contraption creates a beam of pitch-black darkness.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

And of course he uses it to plunge Cat’s world into immediate darkness.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

The Grinch also seems to have cameras following Cat, which they definitely like. Then he says, “In addition to owning your ears and your voice, I can darken a hundred miles round.” So just to catch you up, the Grinch now controls the cat’s ears and eyes.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

Because of which Cat is trying to psychoanalyze the Grinch through poetry and song. He too somehow gets attached to her through a thought bubble.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

One of the songs, which TBH is kinda messy, questions whether the Grinch is him because his mom treated him unfairly. This apparently set off the thought bubble Grinch. I told you we’d come back to the mother thing, and we’ll look at it again soon.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

Then, as the cat tries to get into the Grinch’s house, the Grinch puts the dark spotlight back on him…

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

… that caused his car to crash.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

In an attempt to escape the Grinch’s terror, he heads to a restaurant.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

But there is no such thing as escape in this story. So the Grinch makes moldy cat food, takes away the sound from the live band, and goes to take away a cat of his color.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

The Grinch then turns the cat’s entire world into one big acid trip. Watch the beautifully animated sequence for yourself:

And as Kat says, “Despite the grim fact that she’s corrupt and neurotic, I’ll find that soft spot,” an upside-down shot of her mom’s photo flashes again. Alright let’s go!

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

After going through the Rolodex in his mind about all the things the Grinch hates, he thinks he’s found the one thing he loves.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

So he drags everyone from the restaurant to the Grinch’s house, and they all begin to sing a song dedicated to the Grinch’s mother, which includes the lyrics: “Oh soften your heart / Remember your mother. / Everyone , even a Grinch had a mother. / Who taught him love between one and the other. / Oh, remember your mother’s warm arms as she held you. / Your dear mother Remember the eyes of you. / He adored you. / Remember how hard Mom worked for you.”

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

And despite the Grinch doing his best to stay enraged, he instead burst into tears. Same, Grinch, same.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

And just as he was about to activate his vacuum-sound sweeper, his heart melted, and he pulled back.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

His late mother (yes, she has passed), then appears in his puddle of tears and assures him that everything will be all right.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

The next day, when he took off all his contraception and became a happy person, he did one thing he should never do… went to his mirror.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

And what did his reflection do after the Grinch wished him good morning? This asked him to repeat the Grinch oath once more. here is my.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

Thankfully for the Grinch, Max was on hand with the vacu-sound sweeper to break the Grinch’s evil cycle.

Universal Pictures / New World Animation Ltd.

And that, my friend, is Grinch catches cat move in, It’s a weird, sad, but slightly funny crossover event that happened almost 40 years ago, and deserves a mention along with the rest of the Grinch Cinematic Universe (GCU).

The special is just buried in people’s memories; Therefore, it is not streaming anywhere and can only be purchased as a used DVD or VHS. heroine, But if you wanna see it for yourself, check it out Here,
