Karl Stefanovich ignored the high-profile claims that he had touched a waiter at a charity event and kept quiet about the main story that aired this morning.
It was revealed yesterday that the controversial Today presenter was accused of touching an unnamed waiter at a Mercedes-Benz melanoma charity fundraiser in Brisbane in August. Express Mail.
The 48-year-old hosted an event attended by his wife Jasmine and raised a staggering $290,000 for melanoma research.
The accusations made headlines across the country on Thursday, given that Stefanovic has been a TV addict for decades.
However, the father-of-four made no mention of the allegations on Friday morning’s Today program, while temporary co-host Sarah Abo also blatantly ignored the issue.
This was reported by the Queensland Police. Express Mail that they are investigating an alleged attack that allegedly took place on 20 August.
“Queensland Police are investigating a report of an alleged attack on a man at a Newstead facility during an event on Saturday 20 August,” a spokesman said.
“As the investigation continues, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
Stefanovich was not charged.
Stefanovich was in London last week to cover the Queen’s funeral for Channel 9.
He flew back on Wednesday, leaving co-host Allison Langdon to handle the process outside Buckingham Palace alone.
Channel 9 was contacted for comment.
Stefanovich, the golden boy of Australian television, once had a turbulent year that began with the collapse of his long-term marriage to Cassandra Thorburn, the mother of his three children.
The couple separated in late 2016 and officially finalized their divorce in May 2017, and soon there were reports that he was dating fashion designer and model Jasmine Yarbrough, whom he married in 2018.
That same year, he faced major professional setbacks when former co-host Lisa Wilkinson left Today to be replaced by Georgie Gardner – only to see the show’s ratings drop.
In 2018, he also made headlines after an Uber driver reportedly recorded a 45-minute speakerphone conversation between Stefanovic and his brother Peter, who was riding in an Uber car with his wife, Sylvia Jeffries, during an overnight call, in in which he was reported to have struck colleagues and close friend Richard Wilkins.
The driver shared the details with a $50,000 magazine, causing a major scandal.
Then, in 2019, he was unceremoniously kicked off the show, only to return a little over 12 months later with new co-host Allison Langdon.
But rumors that he was about to leave the show again started circulating earlier this year. Women’s Day in April, it was reported that Stefanovic would step down from his position as Channel 9 breakfast co-host and focus on creating more stories for 60 minutes.
The report stated that Stefanović would continue to play a behind-the-scenes role on the Today show, allowing him to spend more time with his family.
Stefanovich denied the accusations, telling 3AW correspondent Neil Mitchell that the rumors were “absolute nonsense”.
