Video showing staff at 5-star resort in Tenerife taking away towels from those blocking tanning beds in the early morning sparks an online debate

When people say they are going on holiday abroad, we usually imagine a warm country with beautiful beaches and palm trees in the background. To relax completely, some of them don’t mind staying in a more luxurious hotel as they usually offer activities that can be accessed from the comfort of the hotel.

The hotel’s most popular attractions are probably the pools. The only problem is that they have limited space and cannot accommodate all guests at the same time. Some people have discovered a life hack: putting their towels and other things on the sun loungers early in the morning when they are still empty in order to “reserve” them.

The woman noticed that GF hotels in Tenerife do not care how early you get up to mark your territory, but simply collect all the towels and personal belongings, freeing the sunbeds from them. A video of employees picking up towels has gone viral and people who have seen it have voiced their opinions.

Some people think you can save a tanning bed by leaving a towel on it, but this resort takes its rules seriously.

TikToker Amanda Proctor is on holiday in Tenerife, one of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain, and the woman is staying at the GF Gran Costa Adeje. This 5-star hotel is just half a kilometer from Playa Duque Beach and also has a PSA and sports facilities. It also boasts 4 beautiful swimming pools.

In such places, the pools are usually crowded and you may have to make a few circles around the pool to find free sun loungers. Walking around, you can get false hope by seeing no one is sitting on the sun lounger, only to realize that someone is already using it because their towel is on top.

The GF Gran Costa Adeje has a rule that you can’t “book” a sun lounger before 10am, but people do it anyway.

Therefore, the staff simply removes towels and other things, freeing up sun loungers for other guests.

It is logical to assume that a person went to drink or is in the water, wanting to cool down. But in some cases, the person is far from the hotel and is not going to return for a long time.

Tourists came up with the idea to put their towels on the sun loungers so they have a place to sit when the pool gets crowded. They usually get up earlier when there are plenty of sunbeds to choose from, leave their towels, bags or inflatables, and maybe go back to bed or head into town.

Quite a few people seem to use this strategy, as the employee disappears into a pile of towels on their shoulders.

However, many hotels have a rule that you cannot book sun loungers with towels before 10am. Some people may not be aware of this, and some may deliberately ignore it and leave their towels anyway.

You might want to reconsider because, as Amanda Proctor testified, the staff will take those towels and other things if you’re not actually there. She recorded a couple of videos and they really blew up TikTok, with the first having 4.5 million views and the second with 2.7 million views.

People in the comments mostly thought the staff’s actions were fair, while others wondered if they were doing this to guests who had just gone to the restroom.

In these videos, you can see the staff walking around and just throwing towels over their shoulders. Amanda gave a little more context in the comments, saying that the staff took not only the towels, but also people’s things, so they left a note on the sun lounger saying where guests can return their things.

Amanda also said that she filmed these videos around 9:30am so the staff had the right to take everything as the rule says you can’t book sunbeds with a towel before 10:00am.

TikToker thought they were doing the right thing because it’s unfair that people who want to lay there at that moment can’t, and people who reserve sun loungers don’t come back until noon or even later.

Responding to comments, Amanda said she was very disappointed that she couldn’t catch the reaction of the guests when they returned, as it was quite interesting.

Most people in the comments reacting to the videos agreed with Amanda and considered guests who book sunbeds for several hours and do not use them as rude and inconsiderate. Some people have commented that this is not well thought out, because if you were actually sleeping in bed but went for a swim, bought yourself a drink, or went to the bathroom, it would not be very pleasant to go back to the bathroom. We would like to hear your thoughts on this matter. Do you think that guests should be able to reserve sunbeds for themselves, leaving a towel? Do you think the people who block the sunbeds get what they deserve since the video says there are signs forbidding rescuing the sunbeds? Have you ever done this and put your things away? Let us know your reactions in the comments!
