In 2015, the Joe Jonas-led band DNCE’s song Cake by the Ocean was playing on radio around the world.
While the lyrics were confusing listeners when the song was released, what else is there for the hit?
How did Cake by the Ocean come about?
Band frontman Joe Jonas mtv That DNCE was working with Swedish producers to make their first record, who continued to confuse the terms “sex on the beach” with “cake by the ocean”.
“So that’s how the song began,” Jonas told the outlet. “Then, it became this kind of lyrically wacky song, and it’s the epitome of the band. It’s funky, it’s fresh, I think it’s something people can dance to.”
However, the meaning of the song is not immediately clear.
In fact, Cake by the Ocean is often misunderstood as a children’s song, and some people are surprised to learn what the lyrics are based on, including supermodel and America’s Got Talent host Heidi Klum, who explained People, the true meaning of the song “I won’t tell my kids”.
What do some of the metaphors in Cake by the Ocean mean?
The song is filled with cake and general sweet metaphors and imagery alluding to the true meaning of the song.
Throughout the song, Jonas sings about what he sees in the object of his attention: “You’re licking the frosting with your hands / Want one more flavor, I’m begging, yes, ma’am.”
The cake metaphor is amplified here with “licking frosting,” a silly approach to sexual fantasy, but one, nonetheless.
Jonas sings in the second verse about wanting to continue this fantasy and not wait any longer: “I’m tired of this candy on dry land.” Candy symbolizes having fun, while cake signifies the couple getting serious sexually.
