“What is something that is socially acceptable but you can’t help but think ‘why?'” (48 answers)

We all live in a world governed by rules, common sense and socially acceptable norms. The latter refers to things that members of our society generally find appropriate to engage in.

Although social norms often differ from culture to culture, this does not mean that some of the generally accepted things should not be questioned. With changing times, some of them feel outdated or raise more questions than they have answers.

This bright thread Asked people to weigh in and make a list of things that are “socially acceptable but you can’t help but think ‘why?'” There are some very illuminating answers below, so scroll down!

Use of speaker phone in public places.

Or having a loud (should be private) conversation in public like everyone wants to hear.

I was just waiting at the Social Security office and everyone there heard this woman helping this man, I take it to be her man?, fill out his paperwork. She was shouting questions like “Do you have a mental disability?” “Do you take medicine?” Lady, nobody thinks that’s cool.

"What is socially acceptable but you can't help but think 'why?'" (48 responses) Working while sick.

This expectation needs to be stopped. Being expected to work while sick doesn’t make a good employee, it makes a bad employer. It goes without saying how this expectation makes the rest of the employees sick as well. There was a reason everyone at my last job called this place a petri dish, if one person was literally sick everyone else would be too because you either worked or went on the unemployment line. were

Black Friday deals, “sales”, new phone upgrades every year. It’s all very strange.
Working 80,000 hours of our lives is also very strange.

"What is socially acceptable but you can't help but think 'why?'" (48 responses) Saying that your child is going to break a lot of hearts when they grow up or saying to mom “save him for me”.

Anyway, sexualizing children especially when they are too young to understand and start learning that it’s okay to grab a woman’s breast because your parents laughed when you did it and encouraged you. Used to when you were little.

Its totality.

Telling a young person that they will eventually change their mind when they say they have no interest in ever getting married.

Also telling someone that they will eventually want children even if they are adamant about never having children.

For example, I would rather have two cats that I can love and cuddle and cuddle with than a husband or wife.

I refuse to give birth, I refuse to get pregnant, I’m having an abortion if that ever happens. If I ever have children, it will be through foster care or adoption and only if I become moderately wealthy and can give those children a good life, if not? My cats will be pretty close to the kids anyway.

"What is socially acceptable but you can't help but think 'why?'" (48 responses) People are smashing other people’s faces into cake when it’s their birthday, or when newlyweds are sharing cake and they put cake on their SO’s face at the ceremony. Just why? Not everyone thinks it’s a fun, quirky thing to do, it ruins whatever makeup they’re using, and most of the time I see it, people with caked on face get pretty mad about it. , and I think they are justified.

"What is socially acceptable but you can't help but think 'why?'" (48 responses) Not wearing a seat belt. Also the back seat.
Let me tell you a story.

We had a girl in our home, essentially a medical foster placement. Your typical 4-5 years before it ‘happens’.
His family was going somewhere together, mom and grandma (I think) and they strapped him into the child seat. But the child’s seat is not fastened to the car seat. is on a collision course, and this little girl (+child seat) is *sent* through the dashboard. Can’t walk, can’t talk, can’t feed myself, can be 5 years old. A piece of his skull was fractured, repaired, removed again due to infection, and a plate added.

Ffs guys. Put your damn seat belt on. You also become a potential projectile for other people in the car. No one is safe.

Strangers touching all children. Pinch the cheeks, pick them up and kiss them. I had people come up to me at a store and open his car seat cover to look at it. And I’ve had people who knew my mother (strangers to me) come up and kiss her and pinch her cheeks and pass her around when she was just a little girl. None of them are washing their hands. I love seeing people I know hold and love my baby but at least ask especially if you are a stranger.
