Better Call Saul is a prequel to Breaking Bad. There are plenty of black and white scenes in which Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) live as Gene Takavic, who has become the new identity he got at the end of Breaking Bad. But these scenes are set after Breaking Bad events and form the most recent events on the overall timeline. Everything that has color is the past.
According to co-creator Vince GilliganBetter Call Saul begins six years before the start of Breaking Bad, which has its pilot episode in 2002. By the time we get to Walt and Jesse’s cameos in season 6, episode 11, the show is in 2008.
Thanks to the creators’ comments, the fact that Breaking Bad’s story spans a brief two years (September 8, 2008 to September 8, 2010), and this episode summary, it’s safe to say that Walt and Jesse’s cameo in Better Call Saul most likely takes place in late 2008, a few months after Breaking Bad began. In the end, Walt and Jesse are still brewing meth in the van.
Walt and Jesse’s cameo is a continuation of a scene that takes place during Season 2, Episode 8 of Breaking Bad titled “Better Call Saul”, which is a reference to the writers as, as noted above, the 6th season, episode 11 of Better Call Saul is aptly titled Breaking Bad, allowing events to come full circle.
