FORMER Danger! contestant James Holzhauer appeared on the third season of the ABC game show The Chase, which aired on June 14, 2022.
Holzhauer left Jeopardy! in 2019, taking first place. 2nd most money won in show history.
Who is James Holzhauer?
James Holzhauer was a contestant on the popular Jeopardy! where he reached the 33rd round of Final Jeopardy.
A sports player from Las Vegas, Nevada, Holzhauer dreamed of being on the show and was on it every year he was able to.
His passion and excitement for the game show started 25 years ago when he watched it every day with his grandmother and promised her that he would be a contestant one day.
Holzhauer took the online test every year and participated in two auditions for Jeopardy! and one audition for Sports Jeopardy!
“You know, I’ve never successfully passed a job interview in my life – I’ve never had to, and I don’t know if I have the skills needed to be successful in this part of the world. We are very glad that we called this time!” he said Danger! in 2019.
He recalled that it was 23 months after his audition before he got the call when he was finally given the opportunity to be on the show in 2019.
Throughout the competition, Holzhauer said he thought of his daughter as his motivation to calm his nerves and answer questions.
When asked how he maneuvered with the pressure and witty questions on Jeopardy!, Holzhauer told the outlet, “What I do is close my eyes and imagine myself and my daughter going down a pretty slide or doing something together, and that’s keeps me on the ground. .
“It reminds me what it’s for.”
How much money did he win?
Holzhauer lost in the 33rd round to third-place finisher Emma Boettcher on Shakespearean Literature.
He left the show earning a whopping $2,464,216, averaging around $77k per episode.
The final payout of over $2.4 million earned him no. 2nd highest earning in his time on the show, but he went to no. 1st place for the biggest single episode win with $131,127 on April 14, 2019.
He finished with 32 game wins and 97% answer accuracy, as well as 71 out of 75 daily doubles.
Legendary champion Ken Jennings is still the top earner in his 74-game streak that ended in 2004 with $2,520,700.
Jennings said Washington Post in 2019: “Honestly, I feel a bit as disappointed as when I lost in 2004,” adding, “I enjoyed this streak, maybe more than anyone. I really wanted to see what this guy is capable of.
“I feel for him too, you know? It really shows what a fickle hostess ‘Jeopardy!’ is. A couple of breaks don’t go according to plan, and any night could be the last.”
What is he doing now?
Holzhauer is on the third season of The Chase, a game show that pits trivia fanatics against respected and established quiz fans called the Hunters.
Participants have the opportunity to win big money in 60 second rounds called Cash Builders.
If they pass, they compete against the Chaser in a one-on-one round.
Holzhauer appeared as the Hunter along with Jennings, Brad Rutter and Mark Labbett.
The show airs every Tuesday at 9:00 pm ET on ABC and viewers can stream it on Hulu.
The first two seasons are also available to stream on Netflix.
