Who is Pokimane and why was she banned from Twitch?

TWITCH is a live streaming platform that allows gamers and content creators to share their daily activities with subscribers.

On Friday, January 7, 2022, popular user Pokimane was banned for 48 hours from the site.

Pokimane is a popular Twitch streamer.

Who is Pokimane?

Born 14 may 1996, Pokimane’s real name is Imane Anis.

Known for her live streaming on Twitch, the Moroccan-Canadian internet personality rose to fame after streaming video game content such as League of Legends and Fortnite.

Pokimane is also a member of OfflineTV, a group of social media content creators.

The 25-year-old has been streaming on Twitch since 2013.

By 2017, she was one of the most popular accounts on the platform. In the same year, she won the Shorty Award for Best Twitch Streamer.

She was featured on the 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 list and has over 8.5 million followers on the streaming platform.

Besides Twitch, Pokimane is also active on YouTube, where she has several accounts: Pokimane, Pokimane Too, Pokimane VODS, Poki ASMR, and imane.

The fan-favorite streamer has also played more on-screen roles – she had a cameo appearance in the 2021 film Free Boy, as well as in the music video for Sub Urban’s Inferno.

Why was she banned from Twitch?

On Friday, January 7, 2022, Twitch banned Pokimane for 48 hours.

She has broadcast episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender to over 25,000 viewers in violation of copyright laws.

The DMCA – Digital Millennium Copyright Act – criminalizes the production and distribution of technology, devices or services designed to circumvent measures that control access to copyrighted works.

In general, copyrighted music is at a greater risk of unauthorized use than the television and film industry, however Twitch controls what they will and will not allow on their platform.

A new trend on Twitch is that creators are watching various TV shows and movies live, commenting with their followers and answering questions everywhere.

“Fire Nation attacked,” Pokieman joked on Twitter, hinting at the show that led to her temporary ban.

“Suspension confirmed for 48 hours! See you Monday morning for the 12 hour comeback stream, ”she continued.

What is twitch?

Twitch is a live streaming platform where users can stream what they are doing in real time.

Twitch streamers can “stream” their gameplay or activity by sharing their screens with followers or fans who can hear and watch them play live.

Gamers typically use Twitch to show other users tricks and tips on how to complete levels in various video games.

However, Twitch can be used by anyone with an interest in lifestyle topics such as music or food.

The platform was officially launched in 2011 and has amassed millions of users since then.

There are both free and paid versions of Twitch, with the paid tiers removing ads and giving users access to more robust social media, streaming, and storage features.
