While the announcement trailer didn’t showcase any gameplay, it’s safe to assume there won’t be any of the kingdom management mechanics that – by the nature of the original material’s plot – are present in almost every Three Kingdoms game. It’s unclear if you’ll be able to customize your look or if you’ll experience a fully-created character story like in Sekiro.
The press release had little more to say about the fight. The player will master various styles of Chinese martial arts and swordsmanship strategies to harness the mysterious “power from within”. Combat appears to include styles based on “Usin”, a traditional philosophical concept that divides the world into five elements or “five phases”: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. It’s unclear if these elements are just names for themed move sets, or if the player will replicate the elemental martial arts featured in the Avatar animated series, but it looks like Wo Long will expand on the traditional Souls-like combat system to match its setting.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty promises to be an unexpected yet extremely compelling genre mix that will shake up the well-established Three Kingdoms world.
